Overview

Jusangcheolli Cliff is a unique natural wonder located on the southern coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. In Korean, Jusangcheolli means ‘Columnar Basalt.’ True to its name, the cliff is formed by thousands of dark gray columns that fit closely together along the coastline.

Most of the columns are hexagonal, resembling a giant honeycomb when viewed from above, with some columns reaching heights of up to 20 meters. After thousands of years of volcanic eruptions and dormancy, the surface of the lava cooled and cracked under pressure, creating countless hexagonal rock formations. When these rocks were suddenly exposed to water, they rapidly contracted, resulting in the cliff we see today
